You’ll never make the six…

Digital Transformation projects fail at an obscene rate.
You’re up!

Early in the 1987 classic film Planes, Trains and Automobiles, Neal Page (Steve Martin) having been kept late at work, is trying to make a 6 o’clock flight to get home to Chicago and spend Thanksgiving with his family. His colleague John (Lyman Ward) is trying to convince him to wait and take the 8 o’clock flight with him. As the elevator doors close, John leans in and forebodingly chimes “You’ll never make the six…”. A quintessential moment of glee taken by someone reveling in someone else’s pending failure.

Is this the unpublished motto of every digital transformation consultant?

They know you’ll fail and that’s just fine.

Why would one suggest this? Cuz, 70% of digital transformation projects fail.

Consider that according to Deloitte, 70% of digital transformation projects fail.  Say what? Just a sec here.  According to Gartner, 53% of businesses have yet to get themselves digitally prepared and according to McKinsey, the pandemic has forced business to accelerate the digitization of customer interactions by several years.  So to be clear, digital transformation has yet to be broached by almost 1/2 of business, the race is clearly on and more than 2/3 of those who run can be expected to fall on their faces.  Feeling good?  Ok, go!

Why such failure?
